Nathan’s good friend William Hull tried to talk him out of becoming a spy. He reminded his friend of the danger of spying. He worried that Nathan was too honest a man for such work. But Nathan had made up his mind.

Nathan disguised himself as a Dutch schoolteacher looking for work. He wore a wide-brimmed hat and brown clothes. He even brought his college diploma with him. Then he traveled by boat to Long Island.

Nathan spent several days wandering through the British army camps on Long Island. He listened to soldiers’ conversations. He gathered as much information as he could. He took notes. He also drew maps, which he hid in his shoes.
